Professor Johann Albrecht (Alf) Mintzel, born April 18, 1935 in Augsburg, Germany / Bavaria stems from a long and noted line of Franconian-Bavarian printers and publishers.
From 1955-1957/58 Professor Mintzel studied Painting and Modern Art at the Werkkunstschule in Hannover; 1959 until 1961 he studied law at the Universities of Hamburg, Wuerzburg and Marburg. From 1961 until 1967 he majored in sociology at the Free University of Berlin and took as minor subjects psychology and political science. In 1967 Professor Mintzel took his grade in sociology at the Free University of Berlin. Since 1974 Professor Mintzel holds Ph. D. of the Free University. From 1962-1981 Professor Mintzel was a member of the Central Institute for Social Sciences Research at the Free University of Berlin. From 1974-1981 as Assistant Professor he participated in several large projects: 1962/66 "Berlin - Hauptstadtanspruch und Westintegration", 1967/68 "Political Careers", 1968/75 work on his own project "CSU in Bayern". In 1978 Professor Mintzel was active as Berlin specialist for the OMGUS project at the National Archives in Washington D.C. In 1979/80 he was teaching at the Ruhr-University of Bochum; in 1980 he was member at the Faculty for Social Sciences of the University of Mannheim. In 1981 Professor Mintzel was offered a professorship of sociology at the Hochschule der Bundeswehr at Munich. Instead of excepting the offered post he decided in favour of the young University of Passau where he could lay the foundations of a new program and research of sociology. Professor Mintzel stands for a historical and empirical oriented Sociology with emphasis on political sociology (political parties, political elites and careers, social structure, governmental organization and multicultural societies) and the history of sociology. Professor Mintzel is especially interested in the research of regional political and social processes and sociocultural developments.
Better known under the author's name Alf Mintzel he published numerous articles for journals and periodicals, several contributions to anthologies on: the theory and development of political parties and the party system of the Federal Republic of Germany and Bavaria, the sociology of election of Bavaria, the problems of the city of West Berlin, social and cultural history of the press and its professions. Professor Mintzel is also known for his contribution to several leading newspapers, radio and television broadcasting corporations.
In 1964 Alf Mintzel married Inge Lu Schaltenbrand. They have three daughters, Anne, Theresa and Caroline. Alf Mintzel is a passionate painter, drawer, object creator.
